East London Practical Driving Test
In the UK, the practical driving test is a crucial step in obtaining a full driving license. The test is designed to assess your ability to drive safely and independently. The practical driving test lasts about 40 minutes. Passing this test demonstrates that you have the practical skills and knowledge needed to drive independently on UK roads.
Here is an overview of what typically happens during a practical driving test.
Before the Test
Document Check: You’ll need to present a valid provisional driving license and theory test pass certificate to the driving examiner.
Eyesight Check: You will need to read a number plate from 20 metres for vehicles with a new-style number plate, or 20.5 metres for vehicles with an old-style number plate.
Show Me, Tell Me Questions
At the beginning of your test, you’ll be asked 2 vehicle safety questions known as the “show me, tell me” questions.
At the start of your test, before you start driving, the driving examiner will ask you one “tell me” question where you will need to explain how to carry out a safety check.
During your driving test the driving examiner will ask you one “show me” question where you carry out a safety task while you are driving.
Driving Ability
General Driving: The driving examiner will give you directions that you should follow during your practical driving test. You will drive in various road and traffic conditions, but not on motorways. Independent driving is a part of the test, where you’ll either follow directions from a sat nav or signposts for about a 20-minute duration.
Reversing Your Vehicle: The driving examiner will ask you to perform one reversing manoeuvre:
- parallel park at the side of the road.
- park in a bay either driving in and reversing out or reversing in and driving out.
- Pull up on the right-hand side of the road, reverse for 2 car lengths and rejoin the traffic.
Emergency Stop: The driving examiner may also be asked to perform an emergency stop exercise.
After the Driving Test
Once your practical test in completed, the examiner will tell you if you’ve passed or failed the test. You will receive feedback on your driving.
If you have passed, you’ll get a pass certificate, and the examiner will ask if you want your full driving licence to be sent to you automatically.
If you fail, you’ll receive feedback on your mistakes to help you prepare for your next attempt.

Understanding that these manoeuvres are crucial for demonstrating your driving proficiency, our training program is meticulously designed to ensure you are well-versed and confident in executing each one.
These include parallel parking, parking in a bay (both driving in and reversing out, or vice versa), pulling up on the right side of the road and then rejoining traffic, and performing a controlled stop. Additionally, while the emergency stop is not a guaranteed requirement on every test, we also include this critical skill in our training to ensure you’re prepared for any scenario.

This continuity can greatly enhance your confidence and comfort level during the test, as you’ll be performing manoeuvrers in a vehicle, you’re already well-acquainted with.
The practical driving test in the UK typically lasts about 40 minutes. During this time, the examiner assesses your ability to drive safely and competently in various road and traffic conditions.
It’s crucial to have the following documents with you on the day of your test. Failure to present them can lead to the cancellation of your test appointment, and you may lose your fee.
Your UK driving licence: Make sure you have the photocard part of your licence. If you have an old-style paper licence, you should also bring a valid passport as photographic ID.
Theory test pass certificate: This certificate proves you have passed your theory test, which is a prerequisite for taking the practical test. If you’ve lost your certificate, you should contact the DVSA as they can allow you to take the practical test without it, provided they can confirm your theory test pass in their system.
If you’re using your own car for the test, you’ll need to ensure it meets all the safety requirements and that you have proper insurance that allows you to drive the car for the test. At AZ School of Motoring, we ensure all our cars are fully maintained and insured for driving lessons and tests.
Learning the UK Highway Code is fundamental for both passing your driving tests and ensuring lifelong safe driving practices.
Here are the best tips for effectively mastering the Highway Code:
Start with Structure: Begin by familiarising yourself with the layout and structure of the Highway Code. Understanding how the information is organised can help you navigate the rules more efficiently.
Utilise Various Resources: Besides the official Highway Code book, there are numerous resources available, including online tools, apps, and interactive quizzes. These can make learning more engaging and help reinforce your knowledge.
Study in Small Sessions: Break your study sessions into manageable chunks. Short, regular study periods are more effective than cramming, as they improve retention.
Focus on Understanding, Not Memorising: While some facts and figures need to be memorised, it’s more important to understand the principles behind the rules. This understanding will help you apply the rules in real-life driving situations.
Discuss and Debate: Talking about the Highway Code with friends, family, or your instructor can deepen your understanding. Discussing scenarios and the reasoning behind certain rules can clarify their practical application.
Practical Application: When you’re a passenger, observe the driver and traffic, relating what you see to the Highway Code rules. This real-world connection can significantly enhance your understanding.
Regular Review: Even after passing your tests, keep the Highway Code handy for regular review. Traffic laws and guidelines can change, so it’s important to stay updated.
By following these tips and adopting a proactive and engaged approach to learning, you’ll not only prepare yourself for your driving tests but also become a safer, more knowledgeable driver on the UK’s roads.
